Why your skincare should change with the seasons

Woman in Fall Air

Fall is right around the corner.
Make sure your skincare routine is ready for the transition!

As the leaves start to turn and the air gets crisper, our skin's needs inevitably change. Fall brings drier air, colder temperatures, and the beginning of indoor heating all of which can be particularly challenging for those with sensitive skin.

Eczema and psoriasis can flare up or worsen due to various triggers associated with the transition from summer to fall.

Here are the main culprits:

Decreased Humidity: The drop in humidity during fall can make the air drier, leading to reduced moisture in the skin. This lack of moisture can exacerbate dryness and cause skin to become flaky or scaly, particularly for those with eczema or psoriasis.

Temperature Fluctuations: The alternating cold outdoor air and warm indoor heating can cause the skin to lose its natural oils, which = dryness. Of course, these fluctuations can further aggravate skin conditions.

Stress: With fall, there’s often a rush of activities – back to school, preparing for holidays, etc. Stress is a common trigger for both eczema and psoriasis flare-ups. (Wait did I just say "holidays"? Anyone else just develop an eye twitch?)

Seasonal Allergens: Fall brings with it a new set of allergens, like ragweed or mold from fallen leaves. These can be triggers, especially for those with atopic dermatitis (a type of eczema).

Long sleeves and long pants:  Wearing long sleeves and pants can create friction on sensitive skin, leading to increased irritation and potential flare-ups for those with conditions like eczema or psoriasis.

So what adjustments should you make to prepare your sensitive skin for fall's challenges?

  1. Make sure you're using your Simple Sugars daily (face) or every time your shower (body)
  2. Upgrade to the emu oil version of your favorite Facial and Body product, if you're not already using it. The intense hydration will keep your skin from drying out and the anti-inflammatory properties will keep irritation at bay.
  3. Add Avocado Body and Facial to your rotation. Use Avocado Facial (yes, with emu oil!) before bed instead of your usual facial a couple times a week for extra moisture. Use Avocado Body before and after shaving to keep skin super soft and smooth.
