Introducing Simple Sugars all-natural Vegan Body Scrubs!
Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010
Now there’s a formulation of Simple Sugars all-natural body and foot scrubs especially for vegans. Made from organic vegan sugar, plus our exclusive original blend of all-natural oils and organic botanicals, the vegan scrubs provide all of the smoothness you’d expect from a Simple Sugars scrub without the use of any animal products or by products.
What’s the difference between vegan sugar and refined sugar? Well, during the refining process sugar is filtered (for whitening) using a substance called bone char, which comes from cow bones. It’s a completely safe substance- just not vegan. So the vegan sugar has a larger crystal size and isn’t white. Which means the vegan scrubs have a bit of a coarser texture and have a darker color than the orginal version.
Why don’t we just switch to the organic, vegan sugar entirely? Well, there’s a good reason: our products were created to solve the problems of sensitive skin sufferers (myself included). The refined sugar has a smaller crystal size and a lower melting point, so it’s a gentler exfoliant, which is safer for sensitive skin. This is also the reason there isn’t a vegan facial scrub. The vegan sugar is just a little too rough for your face but still a great exfoliator for your body or feet.
The vegan body scrubs are available in the following scents: almond, chocolate, coconut, raspberry and rose. The foot scrub is peppermint. Click this link to get some at the introductory price: tinyurl.com/yj38a2r

Evil ingredient: parabens
Friday, January 15th, 2010
If there is a “most popular” amongst the potentially evil ingredients found in cosmetic and skincare products parabens are it. Parabens in all of their various forms (methyl-,ethyl-,propyl-,isobutyl-,benzyl- and any form of benzoic acid) are chemicals widely used as anti-microbial preservatives in many products. The headlines on parabens suggest that they may be linked to breast cancer. The line connecting breast cancer and parabens was drawn based on the fact that parabens have estrogenic action, that is they mimic estrogen in the body. Parabens do penetrate the skin and can be detected in the bloodstream within minutes of application. British researchers have detected parabens in breast tumors and breast milk. All facts.
So does daily use of products containing parabens increase your risk for breast cancer? The FDA says no. There is no hard data yet to support that conclusion. The Cosmetics Review Board ( which, btw, is run by the cosmetics industry) has determined that the levels of parabens used by manufacturers are safe. Interestingly, if you check a label, you’ll probably see at least three different forms of paraben. A mixture is used so that concentrations of any one type are kept low. But what about the cumulative effect? Another point of interest is that the EPA has detected parabens mimicking estrogen in fish exposed to parabens in waste water (all that chemical filled water that washes down our shower drains) and in water contaminated by swimmers wearing sunscreen with parabens.
So there you have it! Talk about things that make you say “Hmmmm.” Next time you’re buying something that you put on your skin, think about the fact that skin absorption = 10x an oral dose. And, of course, think about the fish. Remember my mantra: “If you wouldn’t eat it, don’t put it on your skin!”
We hardly think we need to say it, but for the record, Simple Sugars all-natural body, facial and foot scrubs DO NOT contain parabens!
Stay Smooth ( without chemicals!)
