|Evil ingredient: phthalates.
Sunday, January 31st, 2010
Phthalates. What? How the heck do you even say that word?
THAL-ate. That’s how you say it. And no matter how you say it, It doesn’t belong in your prodcuts. To be more precise, phthalates are a group of colorless, oily liquids classified as industrial plasticizers. In other words, they make vinyl products soft and pliable (think baby toys?!), they are responsible for the smell of your shower curtain, pool inflatables even your “new car” (who knew it was toxic?). They also help make your perfume “stay with you” and keep your nail polish from chipping. As a matter of fact, phthalates are so ubiquitous that if a product lists “fragrance” on its label chances are good that it contains phthalates. And there are lots and lots of products that have fragrance on the label.
So why are phthalates bad for you? Shown to damage the liver, kidneys, lungs and reproductive systems in animal studies, phthalates can be absorbed through the skin or inhaled. Scientists at government agencies in both the U.S. and Canada agree that exposure to the chemicals could cause a wide range of health and reproductive problems in people. (environment.about.com/od/healthenvironment/a/phthalates.htm)
That’s kind of putting it mildly. My research turned up some pretty disturbing stuff. In a nutshell, women of child bearing age should avoid phthalates. Ironically, this is the group that has the most exposure. CDC scientists found that phthalate exposures for more than two million women of childbearing age may be up to 20 times greater than for the average person in the population. (www.safecosmetics.org/article.php)
The biggest risk seems to be to male babies born to women exposed to these chemicals over time. I’m not going to list the scary birth defects (go ahead and google hypospadias), but I am going to ask, no beg, you to read the report titled “Not Too Pretty” at this link tinyurl.com/yze2adc . Seriously, if men got a hold of this report, I’d bet my last buck that no woman would EVER get another bottle of perfume from a man and rightly so. One more interesting tidbit: phthalates also happen to be regulated by the EPA as air and water pollutants and banned from use in cosmetics in Europe.
Ok, so now that we’re afraid of phthalates, what do we need to look for on the label? Well, that’s the tough part. See, when the Environmental Working Group tested 72 products, although phthalates were present in close to 3/4 of them, they weren’t listed on the labels of any. How can that happen, you ask? Turns out there’s a significant loophole in the law that allows phthalates (and other chemicals) to be added to fragrances without disclosure to consumers. Hmmm. Talk about adding insult to injury. If they are listed you would want to look for DEP, DBP, BBzP or DEHP. So look for natural or botanical fragrances on the label. Here’s a tip: if the fragrance is similar to a type of perfume or something like” tropical breezes” or “summer rain” for example, there’s a pretty good chance there are phthalates in there.
Now don’t forget phthalates are in lots of things that you come into contact with everyday. So you are going to be exposed to them. If you can control the exposure you get through your personal care products, then why not?
And just to be clear, we’ve gone to great lengths to make sure that no Simple Sugars all-natural body, facial or foot scrubs contain any phthalates.
Finally, in the interest of fair balance – if you’re interested in hearing what the chemical industry has to say about how much easier these harmful chemicals make our everyday lives, you can google phthalate information center. Wonder how they’d like to have hypospadias?

Evil ingredient: sulphates.
Monday, January 25th, 2010
By now most of you know that I’m pretty passionate about natural skin care due to my own, very annoying issues with my sensitive skin. As some of you might also be aware, I am the President of the Teens For Safe Cosmetics Pittsburgh Chapter, an advocacy and awareness group devoted to raising awareness amongst teens about the chemicals they shouldn’t be putting on their skin. But it’s not just teens that need to be aware, right? It’s everyone!
It is my humble opinion that if you wouldn’t eat it – you shouldn’t be putting it on your skin. Because what you put on your skin can get absorbed into your bloodstream. Now admittedly there is controversy over just how dangerous various chemicals actually are for you. Here’s my take on it – WHY USE CHEMICALS IF YOU DON’T HAVE TO? Sure, maybe you’re not going to drop dead after using a certain shampoo but it’s something you do daily so why take a chance? JUST SAY NO to chemicals in your skincare. It’s better for you and it’s better for the earth. So with that I bring you the premier Evil Ingredient:
SODIUM LAUREL SULFATE/SODIUM LAURETH SULFATE
What are they? Well, technically a sulphate is a salt of sulphuric acid. In simpler terms, they are dangerous and highly irritating chemicals.
What do they do? Bascially, they make suds and lather. They are also grease strippers. So, you’re likely to find this ingredient, often listed right after water ( which means it’s the 2nd most prominent ingredient) in your shower gel, body wash, shampoo, hand soap, toothpaste and there’s lots of it in Dawn dishwashing detergent. ( I can’t even get near that stuff !) It’s a very common ingredient because it’s cheap and we, as consumers, like the suds.
Why are they bad for you? Sodium Laurel Sulfate is actually the more harsh of the two. Afterall, this ingredient was first used to remove grease from the floor of garages. It can be highly irritating to skin and mucosal membranes and is very drying. Obviously, very, very bad for sensitive skin. Sodium Laureth Sulfate was designed to be a little gentler but there are concerns about cancer risk with it. So neither one is a good idea. There are actually lots of pretty scary animal studies on these two bad guys that I won’t mention here – but you can find them if you google.
What are the alternatives? Well, there are several. First of all – we need to get over our fascination with lather! Suds do not equal clean. Learn it. Secondly, there are more and more products that contain no sulfates. So read your labels and don’t buy products that have these ingredients listed. A newer alternative to these is called sodium coco sulfate and the Environmental Working Group has given it the thumbs up for safety. But be aware that it is new so there aren’t too many studies to actually prove safety yet. So ditch your shower gel and just scrub with Simple Sugars all-natural body and facial scrubs instead! You’ll be clean AND smooth AND healthier AND softer AND kinder to the earth. Any questions?

Evil ingredient: parabens
Friday, January 15th, 2010
If there is a “most popular” amongst the potentially evil ingredients found in cosmetic and skincare products parabens are it. Parabens in all of their various forms (methyl-,ethyl-,propyl-,isobutyl-,benzyl- and any form of benzoic acid) are chemicals widely used as anti-microbial preservatives in many products. The headlines on parabens suggest that they may be linked to breast cancer. The line connecting breast cancer and parabens was drawn based on the fact that parabens have estrogenic action, that is they mimic estrogen in the body. Parabens do penetrate the skin and can be detected in the bloodstream within minutes of application. British researchers have detected parabens in breast tumors and breast milk. All facts.
So does daily use of products containing parabens increase your risk for breast cancer? The FDA says no. There is no hard data yet to support that conclusion. The Cosmetics Review Board ( which, btw, is run by the cosmetics industry) has determined that the levels of parabens used by manufacturers are safe. Interestingly, if you check a label, you’ll probably see at least three different forms of paraben. A mixture is used so that concentrations of any one type are kept low. But what about the cumulative effect? Another point of interest is that the EPA has detected parabens mimicking estrogen in fish exposed to parabens in waste water (all that chemical filled water that washes down our shower drains) and in water contaminated by swimmers wearing sunscreen with parabens.
So there you have it! Talk about things that make you say “Hmmmm.” Next time you’re buying something that you put on your skin, think about the fact that skin absorption = 10x an oral dose. And, of course, think about the fish. Remember my mantra: “If you wouldn’t eat it, don’t put it on your skin!”
We hardly think we need to say it, but for the record, Simple Sugars all-natural body, facial and foot scrubs DO NOT contain parabens!
Stay Smooth ( without chemicals!)
